WEDDINGS AT ST. NICHOLAS ABBEY
Built in the 1650s, St. Nicholas Abbey is one of Barbados’ most enchanting historic estates. Surrounded by swaying sugar cane fields, tropical gardens, and towering palms, the plantation provides a spectacular setting for weddings of every style — from intimate ceremonies to grand celebrations.
At the heart of the estate stands the majestic Jacobean Great House, one of only three of its kind remaining in the Western Hemisphere. Its gabled façade and elegant gardens create a breathtaking backdrop for wedding photographs and unforgettable moments.
Whether you are planning an intimate ceremony for two, a small gathering of family and friends, or a larger celebration, St. Nicholas Abbey offers a variety of unique venues across the estate to suit your vision.
A dedicated Weddings & Events Team will work closely with you to help bring your dream wedding to life. If your event requires additional coordination beyond the estate’s services, an external wedding planner may also be recommended.
Couples may also choose from a range of thoughtful wedding favours inspired by the estate, including miniature bottles of St. Nicholas Abbey Rum, which can be inscribed with your names and wedding date. Locally made preserves, rum cakes, seasonings, and other handcrafted products from the plantation can also be arranged as guest gifts or welcome hampers.

WEDDING VENUES
St. Nicholas Abbey offers several distinctive locations for ceremonies and receptions, each with its own character and atmosphere.
While wedding guests may tour the Great House (depending on the size of the wedding party), the historic home itself is not available for ceremonies or receptions, though it provides a beautiful backdrop for photographs.

CAFÉ TERRACE
Located behind the Great House, the Rum Bond & House Museum opens onto the charming split-level Café Terrace. This beautifully restored stone building features historic rum barrels, antique artefacts, and elegant architectural details including a magnificent wrought-iron chandelier and candelabras.
Overlooking a deep tropical gully filled with palms, the terrace offers an atmospheric setting for both ceremonies and receptions.
For smaller daytime weddings, couples may enjoy a champagne and canapés reception, champagne brunch, or intimate luncheon. For larger celebrations, the terrace can be arranged for cocktail receptions or elegantly set for a seated dinner.
- Daytime weddings: up to 25 guests (non-exclusive use during opening hours)
- Private evening events: approximately 60–120 guests depending on configuration
The Café Terrace can also be combined with the Sandbox Tree Courtyard for larger events.

SANDBOX TREE COURTYARD
Located between the Great House and Rum Bond, the original stable yard has been beautifully restored as a charming courtyard. Its name comes from the magnificent 400-year-old Sandbox Tree (Hura crepitans) that stands at its centre, an indigenous Caribbean species known locally as the “monkey-no-climb” tree due to its distinctive spines.
This breezy, shaded courtyard is ideal for wedding receptions, cocktail parties, and dinner celebrations.
- Accommodates up to 100 guests
- Suitable for cocktail receptions or seated dinners
As the courtyard is fully open to the elements, tents are recommended in case of rain. A dance floor may also be advisable due to the cobblestone surface.
The courtyard can be combined with the Café Terrace to create a larger entertainment space.

MANGO TREE LAWN
Adjacent to the Great House, the Mango Tree Lawn provides a romantic setting for wedding ceremonies and receptions. Guests arrive through the front gardens and follow a natural pathway framed by bougainvillea and overhanging mango trees.
This lawn offers a beautiful garden atmosphere for both ceremonies and receptions.
- Ideal for weddings of up to 120 guests
- Suitable for cocktail receptions or seated dinners
For larger celebrations held on the Croquet Lawn, the Mango Tree Lawn is often used for the ceremony or pre-reception cocktails.
As the lawn is fully open to the elements, tents and flooring are recommended in the event of rain.

CROQUET LAWN
For large celebrations, the Croquet Lawn delivers spectacular “wow factor.” Located opposite the Great House and surrounded by swaying sugar cane fields, this elevated lawn offers breathtaking views of the estate.
In the evening, the Great House is beautifully illuminated, creating a dramatic and unforgettable backdrop for wedding receptions and photographs.
The Croquet Lawn provides ample space for large tents, dance floors, bars, and catering facilities.
- Accommodates up to 350 guests
Cocktail receptions can be held beforehand on the Café Terrace or in the Sandbox Tree Courtyard before guests move to the Croquet Lawn for the main reception.
Due to the scale of events typically hosted here, weddings on the Croquet Lawn must be fully self-contained, including catering kitchens, washrooms, power supply, dance floors, and other event infrastructure. These services are not included in the venue rental, and the use of an event planner is required.
Please note all weddings of 120 persons or more must be held on the Croquet Lawn.
