Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill

Built in 1727 and now managed by the Barbados National Trust, Morgan Lewis is the only sugar windmill in the Caribbean still fully intact, its original wind-driven machinery in place inside the mill, though no longer operational.

Self-guided tours give access to the mill interior and exterior, with signage throughout. Guided tours run longer and go deeper: into the mechanics of sugar production, the lives of the enslaved people who worked here, and the history of what sugar meant to Barbados.

The mill ceased commercial grinding in 1947, and storm damage has since put the sails into storage. Restoring them to full operation will cost approximately one million dollars; every entrance fee contributes to that fund.

The mill is not suitable for very young children or those with limited mobility as there are stairs inside.

Sitting on gently sloping land between Cherry Tree Hill to the west and Shorey Village to the east, Morgan Lewis looks out over Barbados' Scotland District, Chalky Mount, and the east coast down to Morgan Lewis Beach.
