Gun Hill Signal Station sits on the highland of St. George — the only one of Barbados' original six military signal stations still dedicated to that history. Built in 1818 and managed today by the Barbados National Trust, the tour is self-guided and takes in two centuries of military memorabilia drawn from the Barbados Museum and private donations: regimental buttons, a bayonet, cannonballs, and a reconstructed soldiers' kitchen. The approach is through a shaded garden of flamboyant trees, bougainvillea, and Pride of Barbados (the island's national flower). The resident cat, Lily, may or may not make an appearance.

The white lion, carved from coral rock, is at the base of the hill below the Signal Station, and is accessed by taking the one-way road from the Gun Hill car park. Drinks are available at the on-site Fusiliers Bar & Cafe.

The signal station and lion both involve stairs and are not wheelchair accessible.

LOCATION & PARKING

Gun Hill Signal Station is on Fusilier Road, St. George. The main entrance has a car park. The lion is reached via a separate one-way road: follow signs for 'Barracks via Gun Hill' from the foot of the hill and pull into the first parking bay on the right. A bus stop at the main entrance makes the site reachable without a car.
