Highland Pottery

Chalky Mount in St Andrew has been a pottery village for generations. The orangey-red clay in its hillside has been worked by local potters for longer than living memory, producing monkey jars, cooking pots, and the everyday household ware of Barbadian life. At its height, small family operations filled the village. Now just one remains.

Highland Pottery is a working studio and shop, run by master potter Winston Jn. Paul and his wife, Prim. Winston has been making pottery for 42 years, and almost everything in the studio — the kilns, the filter press, the pug mill — was built by his own hand. The clay is collected from a gully just below the studio.

Visitors are welcome to browse without booking ahead. The range includes wheel-thrown mugs, plates, bowls, oil burners, plant pots and vases in Winston’s own hand-mixed glazes; press-molded flying fish, turtles, seahorses, tree frogs and palm tree wall decorations, fridge magnets and coasters; leaf-pressed dishes; and hand-built sculptural pieces. Custom orders are available.

Highland Pottery is open seven days a week, however it is best to call ahead to check. Pottery-making classes require booking in advance.
