Where you and the animals have a great time

Do you like playing with Dogs, or Cats, do you enjoy building, or doing some manual labour? How would you like to spend part of your vacation giving back to the community in which you are travelling?

Join in helping the dogs, cats and communities of Barbados. With your support, Ocean Acres can continue to make a difference, every day. Whether you want to volunteer, or donate, all help is very much appreciated, and you can even enjoy yourself as you generously donate your precious time to this extremely worthy cause.

In January 2020, Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary took over a failing animal charity including 45 dogs and 69 cats, now with over 200 animals. Responding to daily to cries for help, dealing with heartbreaking situations, providing emergency care and solutions for people and their pets in dire need, and working tirelessly to educate and sensitise communities to the importance of animal welfare.

Ocean Acres

Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes stray, abandoned and unwanted puppies, dogs, kittens, cats. Actively sheltering over 200 animals, so many loving animals desperately waiting for a family to call their own. Before they can all be relocated, they still need the love an affection they so desperately need and yearn for, and to learn to trust humans again. This is where you can help, and have some fun while you do.

If petting animals is not your thing, or you are allergic to them, there are other ways you can help out which do not mean direct contact with them. They have an extensive list of building improvements and renovations. If you’re the handy hands-on type and can spare some time to help improve the facilities, these skills are always needed

From Canada - Travel Buddies Wanted

Volunteer as a Travel Buddy, flying dogs back with you from Barbados to Canada. Ocean Acres partners with Canadian foster based rescue organisations, who meet you as you leave the airport. Everything is organised, it costs you nothing, you only need to turn-up at the airport and meet your rescue dog.

Why is this problem such a ... "Problem"?

There is a huge problem with the massive over population of dogs and cats in Barbados. Every shelter in Barbados is full and operating beyond capacity. Irresponsible owners allow their dogs to wander, and breed at will. Stray, dumped and abandoned dogs are roaming the streets. Female dogs are tied outside with nothing to secure them from any passing male dog impregnating them, time and time again. These animals are reproducing at an alarming rate.

A pair of unaltered dogs and their litters can produce 67,000 dogs in just six years, for cats the numbers are even worse, a pair of unaltered cats and their litters could produce 420,000 cats in just seven years.

The resulting puppies and kittens are not wanted or cared for and generally die miserable, painful deaths; or are surrendered to us sickly and infested.

Nursing mothers are forced to scavenge for food, causing a public health problem. Very often, they are eventually poisoned, accidentally or on purpose. The puppies then generally die, or if old enough to somehow survive, go on to reproduce more sad and sorry offspring to endure the same fate.

All these sad and emaciated animals, flea infested, and tick ridden are suffering unnecessarily. Barbados needs to do better and with your help we can all do better making Barbados a nicer place to visit, because even paradise has its issues.

Feel like helping us...
