Walkers Reserve

Connect | Reconnect with Nature

Looking out to sea
Masterplan

Walkers Reserve is located within the unique Scotland District on the east coast of Barbados and sits at the heart of the National Park system. It is over 300 acres of land rising majestically from the northeastern shore of Barbados with sand dunes, sandstone cliffs, forest, clay hills, ponds, wetlands, and so much more filling this vibrant ecosystem.

From 1968 to 2009, this land was known as Walkers Quarry. Nearly every building in Barbados is constructed, in part, from Walkers Quarry sand. Despite the massive outputs necessary to build a nation, Walkers Quarry managed to steward and protect one of the largest native beachside forests on the island.

Immerse yourself in one of the most unique destinations in Barbados.

Sand quarry

History

The Walkers Institute for Regenerative Research and Design (WIRRED) was born out of the restoration of Walkers Sand Quarry. For more than 50 years, the McNeel family provided silica sand to the nation of Barbados.

Ian McNeel, the Director and Founder of WIRRED, began research around building habitats and increasing biodiversity of broadacre degraded landscapes. Ultimately he landed on regenerative agroforestry, using permaculture design principles as the framework to guide the transformation of the quarry into a thriving nature and eco agro-tourism destination.

Vision – Planetary Regeneration

To create regenerative spaces rich in biodiversity where individuals can connect and reconnect to the environment, while building more resilient economies, ecosystems, and communities.

WIRRED brings a holistic approach to the transformation of degraded lands through regenerative research, education, and design. We are committed to environmental stewardship, the economic wellbeing of all communities, and to increasing biodiversity to support a climate-resilient planet.
