Step Inside George Washington’s Barbados Home

Lawrence Washington

George Washington House marks the only place outside the United States where George Washington is known to have stayed. The future president visited Barbados in 1751 with his half-brother Lawrence Washington, spending several weeks in Bridgetown while Lawrence sought treatment for tuberculosis.

Today the carefully restored 18th-century house forms part of the historic Barbados Garrison area. Visitors can explore the rooms where Washington stayed and learn about his time on the island through an audio-guided tour that brings the story of colonial Barbados to life.

The property also provides access to a section of the historic Garrison Tunnels, offering a fascinating glimpse into the island’s military history and the wider story of the Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison.
